Neshat, who is one of the foremost video artists on the scene today, has an eye for composition that ensures that her film is stunning in a frame-by-frame way that references the film’s first incarnation as a series of video installations. The script, which Neshat adapted from the novel by Shahrnoush Parsipour about the Iranian coup of 1953, is somewhat less successful – the dialogue is stilted and abstract, and the scene-by-scene progression of the story seems contrived and clumsy. However, the film has much to recommend it.
