Summary
Writer/director Whedon certainly has a rabid following, and it’s warranted. All three of his television series – “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Angel” and “Firefly” – were intelligently written and compelling dramas with huge cult followings. The problem, of course, is that intelligence doesn’t guarantee big audience numbers – the success of the first two series didn’t keep “Firefly” from being canceled after only one season. But instead of walking away from this failure, Whedon decided to take a huge gamble and bring his small-screen space opera to the big screen and, it paid off. “Serenity” is hands down the best science fiction movie released since George Lucas brought us to his galaxy far, far away. If there is any justice, this will be one of the biggest movies of the year. For those of you worried that perhaps not seeing the original series may affect your enjoyment, forget it – this movie stands on its own two feet. I can’t wait for the sequel.
