A day in the life of two homeless men as they wander through the city, meet an odd collection of characters and swap stories about their lives. This film lacks Arcand’s usual rigorous satire – but that’s the point, really. Shot on a small budget documentary style, the director loosens up and has some fun with his picaresque and, at times, surreal material. It’s sometimes thin and Arcand often doesn’t allow scenes to play themselves out before his characters continue on their haphazard path, but we get a fascinating view of the crumbling wasteland Montreal has become, and a terrific performance from Lepage. Modest pleasures from a film that doesn’t seek to change the world.
