Disc review

Stepping off the nightbus, Montreal electronic soundscaper CFCF arrives reinvented. The gentle keys, softly swelling synths and click clacking beats of the Exercises EP reveal a contemplative side only hinted at on 2010′s The River. Rather than cough syrup hip-hop or anime soundtracks, here he takes cues from the minimalists and Ryuichi Sakamoto’s Playing the Piano. Exercise #3 (Building) lifts off from subtle swirls into an ominous drone that hovers like the rogue planet in Melancholia. Later, Exercise #5 (September) leaps out as the sole vocal track with a David Sylvian cover few would have the nerve to attempt. Another stunner.
