Hailing form Denmark, the country that bred Oh Land, Mew, Alphabeat and, er, Aqua, 19-year-old pop prodigy Asbjørn will definitely be this year’s international breakthrough. Mixing that oh-so-recognizable Nordic melancholia with post-dubstep details that sometimes recall James Blake, all combined with an indisputable pop flair à la Robyn, Asbjørn offers a distinct take on what pop music should sound like in 2012. It should be immensely danceable (like enticing first single The Criminal), yet immaculately written, with codas, minutiae and variations more likely to be found in classical music. It should create moments of pure grandeur (We We We, a breathtaking ballad) and all the while have the balls to come off as bizarre (the sexual undertones of Hunger). This is a magnificent record.
