An electro-pop offshoot of Sherbrooke electro-jazz quintet Misteur Valaire, this new project has the potential to lead to some crazy fun live shows, but on record, it’s not very compelling. Qualité Motel’s got the beats and the grooves and the energy, but a lot of the tracks on this first LP are inconsequential exercises in hipster-kitsch. There are a few standouts, notably Full of Crimes (feat. Fanny Bloom), En selle, Gretel (feat. Yann Perreau and Elisapie Isaac) and especially Piscine/Pool (feat. Socalled). But Motel Califorña as a whole doesn’t have much repeat-listen value.
