Port of Morrow

Disc review

This new LP marks the first new music from James Mercer’s original band since 2007′s restrained Wincing the Night Away, after the delightful escapade with Danger Mouse as the duo Broken Bells and after sacking most of his band (new members are Grand Archives’ Ron Lewis, Fruit Bat’s Eric D. Johnson and Modest Mouse’s Joe Plummer) and leaving indie label Sub Pop for the major Columbia. These are bold moves that are quite fitting for this new chapter of The Shins, as Mercer’s new set boasts some of his most radio-friendly tunes yet. Friendly doesn’t mean easy, though, as Mercer and über-producer Greg Kurstin (The Bird and the Bee, Kelly Clarkson) forge intricate organic-sounding tracks, often showcasing bleeps and buzzes that are Port of Morrow’s most forward-thinking moments.
