Faithful Man

Disc review

In this follow-up to 2009′s amazing My World, funk and soul legend Lee Fields outdoes himself, delivering an even more fantastic collection of new yet vintage-sounding songs, plus a superfly cover of The Rolling Stones’ Moonlight Mile. Fields is once again backed by The Expressions, a band led by former Dap-King and Truth & Soul cofounder Leon Michels, and everything sounds just right, be it the slick guitar riffs, enveloping waves of organ, sharp horn blasts, lush strings or that tight rhythm section. And then of course there’s Lee himself, who sings of love and heartbreak with incomparable urgency and feeling. He still got it!
