Music in the digital age has had paradoxical effects: While it has allowed some unconventional artists to sidestep regimenting record labels, it has also encouraged the emergence of bands more concerned with the aesthetics of their promotional pictures than with music per se. Unfortunately, B.C. pop band Rococode seems to belong to the second category. Their first LP, (laughably) titled Guns, Sex and Glory, isn’t lamentable, but it’s awfully forgettable. The sleek production as well as singer Laura Smith’s innocent timbre ultimately save the day, but one would expect more than a mere Mother Mother rip-off from such experienced musicians, some of whom have previously worked with Tegan & Sara, Said the Whale and Dan Mangan. Downloading Rococode’s song Ghost II would, however, be a great investment; it’s a smooth, haunting track.
