Joey Cape/Hugo Mudie & The City Streets

Split 7″

Disc review

Two contemporary punk rock behemoths clash on this interesting folk-punk split. Yes, "interesting" is the term of choice. While many punk rockers fail miserably when going unplugged, Cape and Mudie have been playing their cards right for years, each with his own unique approach to the genre. The Lagwagon leader’s voice and melodies are crystal clear, inhabited by pop inclinations even, on his ballads Burning Out in Style and Made of Broken Parts. The songs by The Sainte Catherines’ strongman – Get Out of My Head and First Day of My Life – are more refined while remaining as guttural as necessary. The main trait shared by the artists and songs reunited on this project: their rejection of artifice.
