There’s a resurgence lately of hard rock records that sound like throwbacks to the heyday of bands like Van Halen, so why not bring back the real deal? This 12th studio album, their first featuring original lead singer David Lee Roth since 1984, is like a time capsule, many of these "new" songs having apparently been reworked from old demos the band did in the 70s. One way or another, A Different Kind of Truth is rollickin’ good fun, a heavy dose of cheesy, unpretentious rock, fuelled as always by the relentlessly impressive guitar riffs and solos of Eddie Van Halen, with solid support from his brother Alex on drums and his son Wolfgang on bass.
