Tramp

Disc review

Listening to Sharon Van Etten’s Tramp is like waking up from a disturbing dream – you’re troubled and shaken up, yet can’t pinpoint the reason for the discomfort, the dream having faded away. Produced in every shade of grey possible by The National’s Aaron Dessner, Tramp reveals Sharon Van Etten’s rudimentary poetry and ever-shifting vocal delivery, conferring to each track its own mysterious aura. Though evolving at a slothful pace, Tramp still offers a handful of memorable moments: the gorgeous ballad We Are Fine, a lovely duet with Zach Condon from Beirut, the Liz Phair-esque first single Serpents, Magic Chords and its "We got to lose sometimes" hypnotic chorus. An emotional affair with few moments of clarity. Like a forgotten dream.
