Wake All My Youth

Disc review

It’s amazing this band was hailed as one boasting the "math mania of Battles, the gloss ‘n’ grandeur of The Killers, and the calamitous quiver of Arcade Fire" by U.K.’s NME magazine at a time when the Torontonian three-piece had yet to put their music where their buzz was. Until now. On this succinct six-track EP, Young Empires show their listeners where they stand musically: Rain of Gold’s bongo-disco recalls, yes, The Killers’ Joy Ride, while the rest sits between 90s dance music (curiously, Robin S comes to mind) and the hyperactive and hi-hat-heavy Two Door Cinema Club. Best of all? Single White Doves – with its singsong melody courtesy of Ottawa-native Matthew Vlahovich and galloping rhythmic track – will no doubt be a roaring success on indie radios. The following recommendation will probably sound not-so-avant-garde, but what the heck – this is one band to watch.
