Having released the best track of 2011 in Video Games, Lana Del Rey’s recent SNL debacle raises a significant issue: Are we expecting too much out of Born to Die, Del Rey’s debut? In light of its 15 tracks, the answer is a resounding yes. As a whole, each song can be divided into one of the following niches: the first, mesmeric, encloses four or five impeccably written, slow-burning torch songs (Video Games and the title track are amongst them). The second contains moody trip-hop beats on which a Lolita-esque Del Rey coos about her unflinching love. And finally, the last consists of either vapid tunes, like Off the Races, or others like Million Dollar Man, which while agreeable are all reminiscent of tunes from more accomplished artists (Fiona Apple, amongst others). For all the mysticism surrounding Del Rey, Born to Die remains bafflingly one-dimensional.
