Disc review

This is the fourth, long-awaited, much-buzzed-about LP from the Ottawa singer, who in interviews says she tried hard with this release to lose the "alt-country" tag the media has lazily stamped on her since her debut dropped a little more than a decade ago. With the help of her new beau, Justin Vernon, a.k.a. Bon Iver, she has invigorated her sonic palette, adding much-needed groove to her tales of broken hearts and Thelma & Louise-like optimism and selflessness. This enterprise is not without flaws, as Edwards sometimes sounds uncomfortable in her new hipster jeans (Mint, which sounds like a B-side from Sheryl Crow circa The Globe Sessions). Still, with gorgeous tunes like Change the Sheets and Going to Hell, her place on the Polaris 2012 shortlist is almost guaranteed. And I’ll be cheering for her.
