Jokers of the Scene

JOT5

Disc review

Ottawan combo Jokers of the Scene have been making a lot of noise lately with their vigorous and energetic live acts. On this fifth instalment of indie releases, the duo (Linus Booth, a.k.a. DJ Booth, and Chris MacIntyre, a.k.a. Chameleonic) present a bewildering yet intriguing collection of mostly instrumental works. It all starts beautifully with the dreamy, chillwave-y Killing Jokes I, then morphs into a dance floor Xanadu -like monster. From that point, the collection is filled with a combination of throbbing pulses (Organized Sounds) and humongous synth lines, both winning and singularly strange for the Ottawa music scene. A bit too cerebral for the iPod, it’s noticeably on the dance floor that JOT5 will take on its fourth dimension. Also: Download its remixed counterpart, JOT5 RMXD, out now.
