Newcomers among the local indie pop crop, The Fadeout take advantage of the January low tide to release Shapes of Animals, a first CD that has all the qualities and faux pas of a prefatory release. As mentioned in their Facebook biography, the foursome are inspired by U.S. indie rock and Brit pop. As you probably guessed, the band’s prominent personality is sealed shut behind nods to monuments like The Beach Boys (Pet Sounds, Shapes of Animals, get it?) and Supergrass (Sinkin’ Ship could easily follow Alright on an iPod playlist). That being said, The Fadeout’s first album remains honest, well made and, let’s face it, rather catchy. So let’s hope there will be a sequel.
