Mara Tremblay

Disc review

On this self-titled live-in-studio album, Mara Tremblay and a great band made up of guitarists Olivier Langevin and Jocelyn Tellier, bassist Guillaume Chartrain and drummer Pierre Fortin revisit songs from her previous releases in stripped-down versions that feel more emotionally immediate than ever. Nearly half the tracks come from her best LP, 2001′s Papillons, but we also get a few from her 1999 debut, Le Chihuahua, one cut from 2005′s Les Nouvelles lunes, plus a couple from 2009′s Tu m’intimides played by Mara solo on the piano/Wurlitzer. Throughout, the country twang in her voice fits perfectly with the often melancholy nature of her lyrics, in which both love and heartbreak seem to come with a degree of exquisite pain.
