Wish You Were Here

Disc review

The latest from Edmonton’s F&M features new material as well as alternate versions of a few of their older songs (I Pray for the Fog, Walk to You, Amsterdam), plus a take on 18th-century traditional song Streets of Laredo. As usual, songwriters Rebecca and Ryan Anderson take turns singing lead, each connecting deeply with the listener. The former often reminds me of Tori Amos, whether she plays piano or accordion to accompany her dramatic vocals, and there’s this strong Neil Diamond vibe when the latter steps up to the mic. But F&M might be at its best when the two harmoniously join voices. Aided by multi-instrumentalist Bryan Miot Reichert, the couple deliver a sparse yet dense folk record, filled with affectingly introspective lyrics and enveloping melodies.
