Devin Townsend Project

Disc review

Here comes another Devin Townsend Project record, audaciously progressive with lots of death metal, equal parts synthetic, complex and theatrical. The insane genius obviously had a laugh building this odd symphonic metallic piece. How come the great Devin simultaneously delivered two underwhelming albums (see also: Ghost)? It’s somehow hard to compute, since there’s some pretty talented guests here, such as members of Opeth, Gojira, Emperor, Death/Cynic, Meshuggah, GWAR, DEP and BTBAM. Though sometimes inspired, the lack of focus and unity makes listening to Deconstruction kind of, well, deconstructed. We would have loved to give it a better score, but the cheesiness of the affair (thematically) prevents us from doing so. At least Ziltoid the Omniscient (2007) stuck to its sci-fi parody histrionics from start to finish.
