Disc review

Available via Bandcamp (estes.bandcamp.com), this first EP by Montreal trio Estès manages to transport the listener to a mesmerizing prog-pop realm in only four songs. Opening track 1973 Whisper interweaves airy and heavy guitar riffs while singer Frédéric Leroux movingly sings about how love can clear away the darkness ("We seek refuge from the bleakness in each other’s arms"). Next are My Townhouse Life in Philadelphia, with its sorrowful piano and vocals, and Chaloir de décembre, a serene French ballad adorned with rich sonic textures. The instrumental A Darkened Pacific beautifully concludes things.
