Shirts vs. Skins

Disc review

Three years after releasing Lakes of Alberta, his first solo EP and a surprisingly congenial folk exercise, Tokyo Police Club keyboardist Graham Wright plays rough on his album Shirts vs. Skins, a CD that feels like a gawky and uneven mixtape. While the first half of the CD is filled with infectious pop gems any nostalgic fans of David Byrne, Death Cab For Cutie and The Lovely Feathers should enjoy (among them, the single-worthy Heaven’s Just for Moviemakers). The album’s final act slumps with bland folk numbers that feels like leftovers from his EP. Lyrics-wise, Wright goes for the contemporary blues of twentysomethings (Leftovers, for example, is a bittersweet portrait of a slacker), but his witty style makes the whole experience enjoyable rather than clichéd or laughable.
