Pint of Blood

Disc review

Folk deconstructivist Jolie Holland spits a spectacular Pint of Blood with her fifth solo album. In 2008, she came out of Americana limbo with the refreshing The Living and the Dead. Today, Holland offers quite the musical cocktail. On opening track All Those Girls, for example, the Texan songstress combines Tom Wait’s typical slurring with guitar riffs taken straight out of The Velvet Underground partitions. Then, on jazzy number Tender Mirror, Antony and the Johnsons meets Amy Winehouse for a piano-driven heart-rending ballad. While echoes of other artists arise while listening to Holland’s new compositions, Pint of Blood remains a unique, brooding work of art that should please fans of Neko Case and Loretta Lynn alike.
