Shangri-La

Disc review

Jona Bechtolt electro pop’s project YACHT intends to go for the perfect dance album on Shangri-La, its fifth offering (the second with bandmate Claire L. Evans). Two years after See Mystery Lights, YACHT still sails (sorry ’bout that) on the same bright and cheerful sound waves on Shangri-La. With its infectious melodies that fans of tUne-YarDs or Talking Heads should savour and its B-52s-esque kitschy vibe and vocals, opening track Utopia gives the beat to the rest of the album. While some songs are conspicuous, namely Dystopia and Beam Me Up, YACHT’s new CD as a whole seems to lack direction and homogeneity. It’s quirky, boisterous and perfect for summer, but just like flip-flops, Shangri-La could easily end up in the closet until next year.
