The Unspeakable Chilly Gonzales

Disc review

Chilly Gonzales pushes his boundaries once more with this latest release. Two years after his Guinness Record for the longest solo piano performance, the rapper, producer and music madman goes for the first symphonic hip-hop album. Better yet, he delivers. While Gonzales’ usual textual bravado is still present, Chilly seems more self-critical than usual (especially on the aptly titled Self Portrait and Rap Race, where rhymes about his own craft and persona abound). Musically, Chilly’s latest is obviously impressive, as Gonzales and his chamber orchestra literally lay ten miniature operas on one CD. While The Unspeakable Chilly Gonzales might rely a tad too much on metatextuality and introspectiveness, it is still a unique work of art, almost inexpressible in words.
