Fables of the Sleepless Empire

Fables of the Sleepless Empire

Disc review

This local band really is from another world. On the intricate compositions of their fourth release (in over a dozen years), the darkly colourful sextet has matured. Fables of the Sleepless Empire is a more focused effort than its predecessors, being closer to The Mars Volta and The Dillinger Escape Plan than System of a Down. The band still blends numerous musical genres seamlessly (classical, mathcore, black metal, etc.) while bowing before masters like Pink Floyd and Sabbath (even our very own GrimSkunk!). Of course, their sound is still a start-stop melting pot of ambiences, stitched together with utmost virtuosity and vehemence, perfectly delivered by a rich instrumentation. Tight as a hobbit-hole and as evil as the Devil himself, Unexpect will once again tear you a new one. Mike Patton would love it.
