Wildfires and Misfires

Wildfires and Misfires

Disc review

Twenty years of insurgent, ass-kicking, country-punk folk rock anyone? Jason Ringenberg covered a good measure of these titles with sources like Dylan, Cash, Hank Williams, Jimmy Rogers and/or Tony Joe White, as well as doing his own stuff. Look no further than his Shop It Around, a straight-ahead rocker worthy of Tom Petty. For variety in a roots-esque mode this act is hard to touch, as on hard country like If Money Talks, White’s Poke Salad Annie or, if you want to metal-thrash your headspace, Lost Highway. By then you’ll feel this is a soundtrack to Bruce McDonald’s Hard Core Logo. And that’s a good thaing. (Dean Cottrill)
